Christening Cakes – Planning The Perfect Christening

Christening your child is a practise that dates back hundreds of years and a christening (or baptism) is often the first Christian celebration a new born baby will partake in. A christening can be seen as a celebration of a child’s birth and its introduction to the Christian faith and community. Many Christian denominations practise christenings for children whilst some choose baptisms later in life.

When planning a christening, there are several things to consider. Firstly, you need to decide on the date of your ceremony. You will then need to decide on other very important things such as who the God parents will be and which family and friends will attend the ceremony.

If you already attend a church then you should be able to have your christening there with your local priest, minister or someone who is ordained.  However, if you are currently not part of a church congregation then you may need to attend a church for several weeks before a christening there may be permitted.

Typically, a white christening gown is worn although there are different practises depending on denomination and location.

Christening Ceremony Party

After the ceremony has been completed, a christening party is often held. This can be a small affair with selected friends and family or a much bigger celebration.

You will need to find a venue, as well as decide on the guest list. Catering for a christening party can be supplied by a professional catering company or you can do it yourself! Party buffets are a popular choice but you may prefer a meal with several courses.

Choosing a Perfect Christening Cakes

One of the most important parts of a christening party is the christening cake. Often a focal point to the ceremony – they can be very similar to wedding cakes in grandiosity and style.

Christening cakes are typically white with pink or blue accents for girls and boys respectively. Whilst the colour schemes are often quite muted (with pastel colours and shades), they can be highly decorated with animal teddy decorations and religious or baby iconography, including:
  • Angels (cherubs)
  • Crosses
  • Flowers
  • Booties
  • Rattles
  • Baby toys
The shape of the christening cake is also often personalised. Popular styles include books, crosses, round, rectangle and tiered cakes. Christening cakes are typically made as fruitcakes but can be increasingly found in sponge varieties (both vanilla and chocolate). A tiered christening cake allows you to have flexibility with choosing different cakes for different tiers.

In addition to christening cakes, communion cakes and confirmation cakes are also popular religious ceremony cakes.
